Consultancy / Plant Process Optimisation

SPT’s main focus is chemical engineering consultancy. We have a great deal of industrial experience repairing and improving underperforming process equipment. This especially comes into play if your site has equipment that was installed many years ago and the experience and knowledge of that plant has been lost with ex-employees or a change in company circumstances.

Remedial action can often be done with the equipment available and SPT will always attempt to utilise as much of the site services as possible before recommending any alterations to equipment or design.

Whether it is a simple instrument or valve error, or a case of a change in operation required, SPT can investigate and often rectify the issue long before expensive plant re-vamps are considered.

We also provide operator training where necessary and can work with the site team to revamp and improve site SOPs.

Engineering

SPT have worked closely with specialist fabricators for all of their project builds and are not tied to any one supplier. However, SPT are very much a ‘hands-on’ consultancy firm and we manage all of the engineering works directly in order to ensure the quality needed for your project is achieved. We only use experienced and qualified sub-contractors for any onsite work and rely on long standing working relationships with local fabricators and engineering resources for any of our own workshop builds. Our commissioning expertise is second to none and all engineering works are overseen with operation and commissioning in mind to make the process from build to production as smooth as possible.

We have our own large workshop based in Ovenstone, Fife that allows us to pre-build any skid work or small structure to ensure there are no issues when delivered to site. Any issues with fittings or incorrect material supply are picked up prior to delivery to the client meaning a faster installation and commissioning time

Engineering

Commissioning

SPT’s Managing Director and Senior Process Engineer, Nick Fleming, has nearly 20 years of experience of plant commissioning and problem solving across a very wide range of processes. Familiar with commissioning many different types of process including:-

  • MVR and multi-effect evaporators
  • Centrifuges
  • Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF)
  • Solvent  Distillation
  • Solids handling equipment
  • Instrumentation optimisation

We can provide a wealth of experience to assist your plant start-up which will help reduce the time you spend working through process problems.

Commissioning

Instrumentation

SPT uses all of the major instrument suppliers, ABB, Endress, VEGA, Siemens etc. We do not tie ourselves to one supplier and can fit in with the end client's preference. Having done this for all of our projects means we have a sound knowledge of what each supplier can offer.

We also have considerable experience on set-up and operation of the various instrumentation commonly used and most importantly, their weaknesses. We ensure the instrument you think you need for your project will provide you with what you want, and when it doesn’t… we can have a look at it and advise on remedial action.

We do not provide a calibration or repair service; we leave that to the supply companies. But we can provide a cheap alternative for diagnostics and advice on instrumentation when the cost of a company specific service engineer seems too much.

Instrumentation

Automation

SPT can supply fully automated or fully manual process plant or anything in-between. We do not have our own in-house control team so we outsource this to whoever fits the client's requirements.

Having built many plants ranging from simple control cabinet mimics to fully automated, remotely controlled PLC systems we have a broad knowledge of the capabilities and what to offer a client. Often this is based purely on cost. But with HAZOP and safety in mind we can guide the selection process to the most suitable solution for both safety and cost.

Our own engineers have a wealth of experience in dealing with these systems and whilst we do not do any software development we can usually trace a problem long before expensive software engineers need to visit site
